Origination Story

The Trails Challenge Plugin began as a grassroots solution, not a commercial product. We originally built it for Fat Bike Wood River, a local nonprofit advocacy group we helped start.

Our goal was simple: we needed real rider data to understand when, where, and how fat bikers were using the groomed trails in our community. Creating a Trails Challenge became the perfect way to gather that information while also energizing local riders. Participants connected their Strava accounts, logged their winter rides, and watched their progress update automatically — giving us the trail-use insights we needed while creating a fun, community-building experience for everyone involved.

Use-Case Scenario + Future Potential

In its first season, the challenge was free to join and designed purely for engagement and data collection. But as interest grew, it became clear that this tool had far broader applications. The same system could easily support fundraising campaigns, pre-season race engagement, nonprofit awareness drives, club competitions, and outdoor community challenges of all kinds. By integrating directly with the Strava API, the plugin reduces administrative overhead and creates a seamless experience for participants. While the plugin is still evolving, the concept has already proven itself in the real world — and it’s now being developed for wider use so that other organizations can launch their own trail challenges with ease, purpose, and measurable impact.
